The Atonal Guitar Duo

//with// Jared Davis

Based in Central Texas, a contemporary improvisation focused and serialist minded electric guitar duo consisting of Kevin Metzger on guitar and guitarist/composer Jared Davis create original music blending structured form and improvisation while utilizing the practice of strict intervallic sets. The duo plans to record a full album of their compositions in 2024, collaborate on a live recording session with San Antonio's URBAN-15 this upcoming March, and have been recent guest lecturers/artists at Texas State University’s School of Music.

Many Worlds

//with// R. Aaron Walters

Due Early 2024, ‘Many Worlds’ is the debut trio record from Kevin Metzger on guitar with longtime colleague, collaborator, and dear friend R. Aaron Walters. Years in the making the 7-track record showcases the many musical facets and faces that make up Metzger’s musical world that bridges influences in a way that feels natural and congruent; including 3 original compositions, 3 covers ranging from Keith Jarrett to the Grateful Dead, a movement of Bach, and plenty of improvisation from two musicians who have been friends since they were teenagers. Walters helps stabilize and steer this wild ride by taking on dual roles of keyboardist and drummer, while also serving as the project’s producer. Guitar and Keys were recorded as live-takes in 2022 in Austin, TX at the Sherwood Stage, with the drums then recorded in Nashville in 2023 at Chris Leidhecker’s Shop.

The Bachian Swing Consort

Through the awarding of a 2023 Live Music Fund Event Program Grant from the City of Austin, TX Kevin presented a two night live album-recording and concert event on Friday January 19th and Saturday January 20th at 8PM. Seeking to combine the worlds of Johann Sebastian Bach’s music and improvisation a jazz-organ trio made up of Kevin Metzger on guitar, R. Aaron Walters on drums, and Rashaan Allwood on organ/synth will pair 3 of Bach’s Trio Sonatas with 3 movements of free group-improv, and to be complimented by historically informed, but jazz-minded, interpretations of arias from Bach’s sacred works featuring vocalists Dr. Rebekah Smelzer-Staley and Dr. Page Stephens. The concerts are live-album recording sessions and will be released as a future full-length album and accompanying film
